Thursday's program is bound to be a good one, featuring pieces by Astor Piazzolla, Dmitri Shostakovich & Wojciech Kilar.

To describe the concert In TSO's own words:

"Piazzolla's Four Seasons in Buenos Aires was originally written as four independent pieces, but in this orchestral work they are combined into one. Here we are taken to Piazzolla's sizzling, hot, sensual Buenos Aires. We are happily reunited with the award-winning violinist Soyoung Yoon, who is perfect for this work. Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony was supposed to be a majestic symphony, publically touted as a homage to the Soviet Union. What was played at the premiere was instead a short, low-key, joking symphony completely devoid of grandiose pomposity. It was banned for it's ideological weakness, and was first played again after the death of Stalin. Though it has an ironic sense of humour to it, it is also full of a certain kind of melancholia and a sense of sorrow.

Wojciech Kilar was among the leading figures in 1960's Polish avant-garde, but moved into more minimalistic expressions with long melodic lines and later into more neo-classical compositions. His most famous work Orawa will be performed, a work which combines his two signature elements: the repetitive and the folkloristic."
